Take a look at the contrasts in wood. The top of the table is poplar, with live edge pecan trim. The drawer front is live edge pecan, believe it or not, from the same pecan slab. The rest of the nightstand is poplar, a softer hardwood, but sturdy, with interesting colors. 

The poplar is typically light cream to yellowish-brown, with green streaks. The pecan is richer, with medium to dark brown to reddish hues. I also find the dramatic grain pattern amazing, contrasting the poplar's subtle grain streaks.
